Treatment of acute diarrhea in children over 2 years of age in addition to oral rehydration and in adults.
Symptomatic treatment of chronic functional diarrhea in adults.
Symptomatic treatment of pain associated with functional intestinal disorders in adults.
DOSAGE
In children from 2 years old: 4 sachets per day for 3 days then 2 sachets per day for 4 days.
In adults: On average 3 sachets per day for 7 days. In practice, the daily dosage can be doubled at the beginning of treatment.
Other indications:
In adults : On average 9 grams (3 sachets) per day.
ADMINISTRATION
Oral route.
The contents of the sachet must be suspended just before use.
In children, the contents of the sachet can be diluted in a bottle of 50 ml of water to be distributed during the day, or mixed with a semi-liquid food: broth, stewed fruit, mashed vegetables, baby food.
In adults, the contents of the sachet can be diluted in half a glass of water.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Hypersensitivity to diosmectite or to any of the excipients.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Diosmectite should be used with caution in patients with a history of severe chronic constipation.
In infants and children under 2 years of age, the use of diosmectite should be avoided. The standard treatment for acute diarrhea is oral rehydration solution (ORS).
In children over 2 years of age, treatment for acute diarrhea should be combined with early administration of oral rehydration solution (ORS) to avoid dehydration.
Chronic use of diosmectite should be avoided.
In adults, the treatment does not dispense with rehydration if this proves to be necessary.
The extent of rehydration by oral or intravenous rehydration solution should be adjusted according to the intensity of the diarrhea, the age and the particularities of the patient.
The patient should be informed of the need to:
Rehydrate with abundant drinks, salty or sweet, in order to compensate for fluid losses due to diarrhea (the average daily water intake for adults is 2 liters);
To maintain the food the time of the diarrhea:
+ by excluding certain intakes and particularly raw vegetables, fruits, green vegetables, spicy dishes as well as frozen foods or drinks;
+ by favoring grilled meats and rice.
This medicine contains glucose. Its use is not recommended in patients with fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase / isomaltase deficiency.
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER MEDICAMENTS
As the adsorbent properties of this product may interfere with the timing and / or absorption rates of another substance, it is recommended that any other drug be administered away from diosmectite (more than 2 hours, if possible).
FERTILITY, PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Pregnancy
There are no data or there are limited data (less than 300 pregnancies) from the use of diosmectite in pregnant women.
Studies carried out in animals are insufficient to make it possible to conclude on reproductive toxicity.
Diosmectite is not recommended during pregnancy.
Lactation
There are limited data from the use of diosmectite during breast-feeding.
Diosmectite is not recommended during breast-feeding.
Fertility
The effect on human fertility has not been studied.
Effects on ability to drive and use machines
No studies on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed. However, the expected effect is zero or negligible.
